City of Vancouver, BC – Zero Emissions Building Plan
The city of Vancouver has set 2050 as the target date to have the city powered by renewable energy. The plan includes two paths that can be followed to reach the greenhouse gas emission level limits, depending on new or existing construction, distric energy system connectivity etc.
The plan outlines the following strategies that will be implemented to achieve their goal:
- Establishing emissions and energy-use targets by building type and progressively reducing these targets to zero.
- City-led building projects will have zero emissions building approaches.
- Develop tools to motivate builders and developers to pursue effective approaches to zero emissions in their new construction buildings.
- Build industry capacity through shared information and development of a centre of excellence for zero emissions building which will help remove barriers, provide a platform for knowledge sharing and skills development.
This provides an exciting opportunity for engineers working in the city of Vancouver. Innovative engineering will be needed to make this effort a success. A very exciting time for Vancouver!
