ASHRAE Region XI News

Research Promotion

Welcome to another year for ASHRAE and ASHRAE Research. I am Ryan MacGillivray, the Vice-Chair of our region for Research Promotion, from the Saskatoon Chapter. I am in my second year as RVC-RP.

First, I wish to congratulate all 2012-13 RP Chairs, their volunteer committees, and their chapter members and businesses. With their dedication and support, Region XI was able to raise $162,188, which is 8% percent above our goal. Ten of the twelve chapters reached their goal, and two chapters reached both their high-five and their challenge goals. This is great, and I hope we can continue with your support. After British Columbia claimed the top chapter in our region for the previous year, Puget Sound reclaimed the top spot with $30,153. Alerton Controls renewed their Golden Circle contribution. In total we had 443 contributors and each of them deserve our gratitude. ASHRAE Society once again was able to surpass the $2 million mark, with final results coming in at $2,156,124.

Enough about last year though. I am looking forward to the upcoming Research Promotion Campaign. I am hopeful that we can continue the successful RP campaigns of the last few years, and as such, our Regional Goal is now $156,300.

Last year, the RP Committee was given the task to raise money for the Lynn Bellenger Scholarship Fund, in an attempt to fully endow this scholarship. Society wide, $53,080 was raised and a $5,000 will now be issued yearly. This fundraising for scholarships will continue this year, with each chapter having another mini-goal to be achieved by October 31. In addition, the RP Committee is able to collect money for YEA, and it still applies to your RP goal. This money will be used for the YEA Leadership U, or the YEA Leadership Week-end, to help the younger members of ASHRAE.

The RP Campaign is just really getting started – most of the regional officers have donated at least at the Honor Roll level – thank you for your support!

The money raised by the RP campaign is really necessary to fulfill the ASHRAE Mission and Vision:

ASHRAE Mission:
To advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.

Vision:
ASHRAE will be the global leader, the foremost source of technical and educational information, and the primary provider of opportunity for professional growth in the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerating.

In addition to the “typical” ASHRAE research projects – Advanced Energy Design Guides, Commissioning, Thermal Comfort, Energy Efficient Design, High Performance Building – ASHRAE is also investing in new technologies other areas. Some current research includes: Air quality within aircraft, energy guideline for historical buildings, Conservation of water use in Buildings, Facility Smart Grid, Commercial Building Energy Audits, Cancer Treatment using freezing, nanotechnology, and biowalls. ASHRAE research affects our lives, and the lives of the people we care about.

100% of the money raised by the annual RP Campaign is used to fund research. How many other non-profit organizations can say that? In addition, for the Canadian Chapters, all of the money raised in Canada, stays in Canada. Each year, ASHRAE funds over $5 million of new research projects, with an annual amount over $15 million going to support research. Currently, our region is receiving only $10,000 in research funding, for a Grant-In-Aid project.
