Student Activities Updates
Dr Alison Kwok has been named the “2012 Student Branch Advisor of the Year” for ASHRAE! Alison is the Advisor for the University of Oregon, located in Eugene, OR. This prestigious award is a first for Alison, Oregon, and Region XI. Congratulations to Alison! She will be formally recognized at the Winter Meeting in Dallas. Alison has been active and extremely influential in introducing green design, net-zero, and LEED, to her Architecture students – teaching them to embrace mechanical systems as part of the architecture, rather than fear them. Alison has guided her students to win the 2011 Undergraduate Project Grants and received a Distinguished Service Award from ASHRAE. It has been my pleasure to work with Alison and to consider her a good friend.
Portland State University was honored with a “Rising Star Award” for their submission to the Student Design competition, Integrated Sustainable Building Design sub-category. They will be formally recognized in Dallas for their efforts.
There were two universities from Region XI that were awarded 2012 Undergraduate Project Grants. The University of Alberta was awarded a grant based on their submission titled “Undergraduate Boiler Performance Laboratory”. The University of Alaska was awarded a grant based on their submission titled “Air Duct Simulator”. Congratulations to both schools. All ABET-accredited schools in Region XI are able to apply for Undergraduate Project Grants. Visit the Student Zone of the ASHRAE website for more details.
Congratulations to Eastern Washington University for having their Student Branch application accepted by ASHRAE. Michael Nafzgar, Student Activities Chair for the Inland Empire Chapter, championed the effort with Student Advisor, Dr. Donald Richter.
Lastly, it is important to have all ASHRAE products bearing the new logo. That means banners, letterheads, websites, etc should all have customized logos with the Student Branch name with its preferred colors. Please talk to me if you need to update your logos or if you have no idea what I’ve just mentioned.
Have a great 2012-2013 ASHRAE season!
